MORGANTOWN, W.Va.– The WVU men and women’s swimming and diving teams took on Pitt this afternoon in the WVU Natatorium. The women were victorious against the Panthers with nine first-place finishes and a score of 161.5 to 138.5, while the men fell 124.5 to 175.5.

The meet got off to an exciting start with both the men and women’s 200 medley relay teams taking first. The women’s team of Danielle Smith, Jenelle Zee, Julie Ogden and Rachael Gorrie finished in 1:46.55, and the men’s team of Bryce Bohman, Jack Greenhalgh, Taylor Camp and Tim Squires finished in 1:32.33.

Rachael Burnett and Kata Fodor took first and third in the 1000 free and the 500 free. Burnett finished first in the 1000 free with a time of 10:01.35 and 4:57.32 in the 500 free. Fodor took third in the 1000 free with a time of 10:18.13 and 5:00.79 in the 500 free. In the 200 free, the women took first, third and fourth. Burnett took first (1:52.42), Mandie Nugent third (1:54.27) and Fodor fourth (1:54.74).

The women continued to finish first with Smith in the 100 back (57.00), and Nugent in the 200 fly (2:02.42). Ogden and Austen Carrington also had scoring finishes in the 200 fly, Ogden taking third (2:06.95) and Carrington fourth (2:11.18). In the 100 fly the women took first through third. Nugent finished first (56.78), Ogden second (57.48) and Nikki Vetterlein third (58.00).

“We had a really solid effort from everyone,” says coach Vic Riggs. “It was a nice win for them and a good step forward for our program. This is certainly a great way to start as we move towards our BIG EAST Championships. Haily (Vande Poel) and Jenn (Rey) scoring on the boards as they did helped us put the meet away by the 100 fly. I was really proud of the ladies team and it’s always nice to beat Pitt.”

The men took second through fourth in the 100 back with Bohman taking second (50.74), Brandon Carr third (51.51) and Eric Johnson fourth (52.47). Camp finished first in the 200 fly (1:50.90) and the 100 fly (49.60). Bohman finished second in the 100 fly (50.46). Squires took first in the 50 free (20.69), while Brad Eichenseer tied for second (21.38). Squires also finished first in the 100 free (45.66). Bohman took first in the 200 back (1:50.57) and Johnson third (1:52.44). Newcomer Nathan Cobbe finished second in the 500 free (4:39.74).

“It was a good day for our men. It was great to start off honoring our seniors,” says Riggs. “We did a great job getting out of the gate fast with the relays. We seemed to lose momentum after that and couldn’t get it back. It was a nice meet by Bryce Bohman, Eric Johnson, Taylor Camp, Tim Squires and Brandon Carr. It was obviously disappointing to lose but this should be great motivation.”

The women continued to swim well throughout the meet with Eva Burlingham tying for first in the 100 free (53.46) and taking second in the 50 free (24.65). Smith took second in the 200 back (2:03.06) and Carrington fourth (2:07.22). Zee finished third in the 100 breast (1:06.51) and fourth in the 200 breast (2:22.67). Breanna McCann took second in the 200 breast (2:22.67) and fourth in the 100 breast (1:06.55). McCann also added points to the women’s score with a third-place finish in the 200 IM (2:08.03).

In the diving well, both the men and women were successful. Haily Vande Poel finished first on the 1-meter (251,92) and the 3-meter (248.77) and Jenn Rey finished third on the 3-meter with a score of 207.15. Matt O'Neill took first on the 3-meter (280.95) and fourth (228.97) on the 1-meter. Richard Pokorny finished third on the 1-meter (238.87) and the 3-meter (255.22).

The final 400 free relay events came down to close finishes. The women’s team of Smith, Gorrie, Nugent and Burnett finished first with a time of 3:30.87. The men’s team of Camp, Eichenseer, Squires and Cobbe took second with a time of 3:04.18.

Both teams will be back in action Jan. 21 at Maryland.
