WVU 13th in Latest Directors' Cup Standings

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University moved up seven spots and currently stands in 13th place in the 2011-12 Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup final fall standings.

The second-highest ranked team in the BIG EAST, WVU has compiled 197.0 points to date, with football’s 18th-place finish contributing 56 points to the Mountaineers’ latest ranking; WVU ranked 20th in the Dec. 22 standings.

Six BIG EAST schools rank in the top 50, with Louisville leading the way at No.11 with 212.0 points. Connecticut (29th), Syracuse (32nd), Georgetown (34th) and Villanova (37th) are also in the top 50.

Stanford leads all schools with 382.0 points, followed by Florida State (351.0), North Carolina (329.0), UCLA (328.0) and Michigan (272.0).

WVU has finished in the top 50 in the Directors’ Cup standings for four straight years, including last season’s 40th-place finish. WVU finished 37th in 2010, a school-best 30th in 2009 and 50th in 2008.

The Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution’s finish in up to 14 sports – seven women’s and seven men’s.

The first winter Division I standings will be released Thursday, March 22.
