Track: Indoor Season Resumes
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After a month’s break for the holiday season, the WVU track and field team resumes the 2012 season on Saturday at the Nittany Lion Challenge in State College, Pa.
Track and field events are scheduled to begin simultaneously at 11 a.m., and end with the distance medley relays at approximately 4:30 p.m. at Penn State’s Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track.
“Christmas vacation always brings with it a disruption in training as many do not have facilities to get the quality of work in that we need,” says WVU coach Sean Cleary. “Our event coaches seem pleased with our overall focus as we enter this weekend’s competition.”
The Mountaineers will face the likes of Penn State, Pitt, Albany, Maryland and Cornell.
“We travel to Penn State as often as we do during the season to face the level of competition that their meets provide,” Cleary says. “This will be a good gauge of where we are at this early point of the season.”
The meet is the second for the year for WVU, which opened the season with the WVU Holiday Classic on Dec. 3. At the meet, the Mountaineers saw four athletes earn BIG EAST qualifying marks and hope to earn more on Saturday.
“The goals for the weekend are simple,” Cleary says. “We need to take advantage of the opportunity and return having knocked the rust out and prepare for the rest of the season. I have said before that the outdoor season is our main focus of the year, so we will not sacrifice outdoors for quick fixes indoors.”
The Nittany Lion Challenge will be scored live and can be viewed at gopsusports.com. Full results can be seen on MSNsportsNET.com at the conclusion of the meet.
