MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 3-ranked West Virginia University rifle team will play host to No.19 Akron tomorrow, Jan. 14, at the WVU Rifle Range, at 8 am.
The match will be the Mountaineers’ (6-0, 4-0 GARC) first of the spring semester. The team closed out the fall semester and defeated Ole Miss, 4671-4646, at home on Nov. 12.
“It’s really nice to get the spring semester off to a start. Everyone had a good long break, and this will be a good match to dust the cobwebs off,” explains coach Jon Hammond. “Hopefully, they’re all excited.”
In its last match against the Rebels, Hammond’s squad dominated the smallbore competition with junior Petra Zublasing coming in first (592); a Rebels’ shooter took second, while the next four spots were taken by seniors Justin Pentz and Michael Kulbacki and freshmen Amy Bock and Thomas Kyanko. Zublasing finished first overall (1190) after dominating the air rifle competition (598).
Through the first six matches of the season, Zublasing has finished first in each with a combined average of 1185.33.
The Mountaineers own a 9-0 record against the Zips (2-1-0).
