Wrestling: Six Grapplers Hold Spots in Rankings

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – Following the team’s 23-12 victory over Michigan State last Friday night, six wrestlers from the West Virginia University wrestling team are ranked by various publications.

Junior Shane Young, redshirt sophomore Nathan Pennesi, sophomore Michael Morales, redshirt junior Lance Bryson, redshirt senior Matt Ryan and redshirt senior Brandon Williamson are all ranked.

Young (125), who leads the team with 16 takedowns in the team’s five dual meets and has a 15-3 overall record, is ranked No. 25 by Wrestling Report, No. 18 by InterMat and No. 20 by Wrestling Insider Newsmagazine.

Pennesi (133), who has a total of 10 major decisions this season and a team-high 19 wins, is ranked No. 26 by Wrestling Report.

Morales (141) is ranked No. 29 by Wrestling Report after he posted victories in both of the matches he has wrestled this season.

Bryson (174) has compiled a 17-8 mark this season and is ranked No. 20 by Wrestling Report, No. 19 by InterMat and No. 20 by Amateur Wrestling News.

Ryan (184) holds the highest ranking of any Mountaineer wrestler, as he is ranked No. 17 by Intermat, No. 18 by WIN and No. 20 by Wrestling Report. Ryan is 9-3 this season.

Williamson (HWT) comes in at No. 23 in the Wrestling Report poll and has an overall record of 15-6.

WVU will return to action this weekend, as it hosts dual meets against Eastern Wrestling League foes Bloomsburg and Clarion. Saturday’s action against Bloomsburg is set to begin at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday’s match against Clarion will begin at 2 p.m. Fans arriving early will be given the opportunity to sit mat side for each match.
