Men's Soccer: WVU Ranked No. 23 in Attendance

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The NCAA has released its 2011 men’s soccer attendance figures and the West Virginia University men’s soccer team ranked 23rd in average attendance for its fourth-consecutive Top 25 finish.

"A special thank you to Mountaineer nation for their unwavering support in 2011,” coach Marlon LeBlanc says. “The local community and the Mountaineer Maniacs have been instrumental in our ability to grow this program to national prominence.”

WVU raised its average fans per game to 1,087, up 40 from 2010, while the total home attendance was 9,784. The Mountaineers played in front of 1,000-plus fans at home in six of the nine home games in 2011, including 1,850 fans against Binghamton and 1,719 against Connecticut. WVU had a regular season average attendance of 1,217 fans per game.

“We enjoyed some wonderful moments in 2011, especially, our 2-0 win over No. 1 ranked Connecticut in October,” LeBlanc says. “Our players really enjoy the atmosphere provided to them by our fans and clearly Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium has become one of the best venues in college soccer.”

The attendance numbers have continued to grow since LeBlanc took the helm in 2006. WVU averaged 392 fans per game from 2003-05, while an increase began in 2006 with 695 fans per game, followed by 1,032 fans per game in 2007, 996 fans per game in 2008, 1,021 fans per game in 2009 and 1,047 fans per game in 2010.

WVU also played in front of big crowds on the road, playing in 10 road games in front of an average of 1,530 fans per game. Top road attendances included Virginia (3,012), Maryland (4,629), UC Santa Barbara (3,136), Cal Poly (1,041), Notre Dame (1,635) and Maryland (2,437).

In total, the Mountaineers played in front of a total 25,086 fans in 2011 for an average of 1,320 per game.

The BIG EAST was well represented in the Top 25 of average attendance with Connecticut ranking fourth (3,579), Louisville ranking sixth (3,023) Notre Dame ranking 15th (1,447), USF ranking 17th (1,405) and St. John’s ranking 18th (1,371).

UC Santa Barbara led the nation in average attendance per game at 4,782 fans, while Maryland was ranked No. 2 with 3,781 fans per game.
