MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Nearing the midpoint of the indoor season, the West Virginia track and field team returns to State College, Pa., to compete at the Penn State National on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 27-28.
The meet is scheduled to begin at 5:45 p.m. on Friday, while Saturday’s events will begin at 10 a.m. at Penn State’s Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track.
“This weekend will provide a great opportunity for our team,” says WVU coach Sean Cleary. “We will have the chance to see in excess of 60 schools, many from the BIG EAST, Big Ten and ACC.”
The Mountaineers will face the likes of No.14 Ohio State, No. 22 UConn, No. 23 Villanova, No. 25 Georgetown, Central Michigan, Duke, East Carolina, Syracuse, Pitt, Wisconsin, Virginia and host Penn State.
“As of late our jumpers have been leading the way,” Cleary says. “They have all qualified for BIG EAST and hope to qualify for NCAAs. We will slowly begin to move our distance runners into competition. Our depth should be better over the next few weeks.”
The meet is the second of the year for WVU in State College, Pa., as the Mountaineers competed at the Nittany Lion Challenge two weeks ago. At that meet, the Mountaineers saw two athletes earn BIG EAST qualifying marks in jumpers Sydney Cummings and Meghan Mock. Eight WVU student-athletes have qualified to participate in the BIG EAST Indoor Championships thus far.
