MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 3-ranked West Virginia University rifle team defeated NC State, 4647-4577, during today’s match at the WVU Rifle Range.

The Mountaineers (10-2, 5-1 GARC) outshot the Wolf Pack (25-10, 0-6 GARC) in both guns, winning air rifle, 2346-2318, and smallbore, 2301-2259.

“We would have liked to have had a better all around performance," explains coach Jon Hammond. “It definitely was not our best of the year, and our smallbore is still a little lower than what we would like. Ultimately, we want to improve and make sure we have better all around performances.”

Contributing their talents to today’s match were freshmen Taylor Ciotola, Meelis Kiisk and Thomas Kyanko, and seniors Michael Kulbacki and Justin Pentz.

WVU’s top shooter, junior Petra Zublasing, did not participate in this weekend’s matches due to a competition with the Italian National Team.

Pentz claimed first overall with a combined score of 1166. Ciotola’s score of 1163 was good enough for second overall, and teammate Kiisk finished third overall with a score of 1161.

Kiisk also dominated the air rifle competition with a score of 588 (98, 100, 97, 99, 97, 97). Ciotola, Pentz and Kulbacki tied for second with scores of 586. NC State’s Dani Foster paced the Wolf Pack with a score of 581. Freshman Amy Bock tied a member of the Wolf Pack for fifth place with a score of 579. Kyanko and junior Chance Cover tied for seventh place with scores of 571.

Pentz finished first overall in the air rifle competition with a score of 580 (199 prone, 186 standing, 195 kneeling). Ciotola tied with NC State’s Foster for second place with a score of 577. Bock (575) finished fourth, Kiisk (573) finished fifth and Kulbacki (571) finished sixth. NC State was paced by Madeline Pike (568). Cover (567) and Kyanko (564) finished eighth and ninth respectively.

“We’ve had four weekends in a row now so the team could do with a break,” says Hammond. “We’ll do different things in training this week and move on towards NCAA qualifiers.”

The Mountaineers will have a week of rest before playing host to VMI on Saturday, Feb. 18, for NCAA Qualifiers at the WVU Rifle Range.
