MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Following a year of excellence in academics and competition, redshirt senior Ahna Lewis was named to the 2011-12 American Eagle Outfitters BIG EAST Institutional Female Scholar-Athlete list Tuesday evening.

The Morgantown native, currently working toward a master’s degree in secondary education after receiving a bachelor’s degree in English, owns a perfect 4.0 GPA.

“We’re all very proud of Ahna,” says WVU coach Sean Cleary. “Four and a half years of college without a grade lower than an ‘A’ is remarkable. She had a great student-athlete role model as a freshman and now provides great leadership both on and off the field. She has accomplished so much for our program as an athlete, but will be remembered for her ability to balance the demands placed upon her in the classroom.”

Following the 2011 cross country season, Lewis was named the female NCAA Elite 89 Award winner for the sport of cross country. During the season, she earned All-Mid-Atlantic region honors by placing 19th at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional in November. Other highlights included placing 11th at the Penn State National and competing in both the BIG EAST Championship (28th place) and NCAA Championship (116th). She was a three-time participant at the NCAA Championship throughout her WVU career.

Compiled by the conference’s Academic Affairs Committee, each institutional winner receives $2,000 toward graduate studies. Thirty-two student-athletes (one male and one female from each of the BIG EAST’s 16 member institutions) will be named as the winners of the American Eagle Outfitters BIG EAST Institutional Scholar-Athlete Scholarships. The conference also names male and female American Eagle Outfitters BIG EAST Basketball Scholar-Athletes of the Year and an American Eagle Outfitters BIG EAST Football Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Marquette soccer player Natalie Kulla was named the 2011-12 American Eagle Outfitters BIG EAST Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Former Mountaineer Charity Wachera was given the same honor in 1998.
