Swimming: Day Four of Prelims Comes to an End
PITTSBURGH, Pa.- The final preliminary events for the 2012 BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Championships took place this morning. The WVU swimming and diving teams will return 19 to tonight’s finals. In the women’s 200 back, Danielle Smith and Rachael Gorrie remained neck in neck with the competition, only to pull ahead in the last second of their race. They are seeded No. 5 (1:59.29) and No. 6 (1:59.52) in tonight’s finals. Joining them will be Tiera Butkus as the No. 8 seed. Nikki Vetterlein had a great swim in her heat, landing her the No. 10 seed in the consolation finals. Bryce Bohman and Eric Johnson swam well in their heat in the 200 back, landing them the No. 6 (1:48.10) and No. 7 (1:1:48.18) seeds in the finals. Jake Querciagrossa took the No. 10 seed (1:48.66) in the consolation finals, followed by David Pally as the No. 11 seed (1:48.76). Tim Squires had a solid performance in the 100 free, earning the No. 4 seed (42.95) in the finals. Brad Eichenseer will join Squires in the finals as the No. 8 seed (44.42). Nathan Cobbe swam with ease in his heat to the No. 15 seed (45.18) in the consolation finals. In the 200 breast, Breanna McCann took the No. 8 seed for tonight’s finals. Jaryn Studer will compete as the No. 15 seed (2:18.13) in the women’s consolation finals, and Jack Greenhalgh is the No. 14 (2:03.06) in the men’s. Mandie Nugent will compete as the No. 2 seed (1:57.39) in the 200 fly finals tonight. Nugent is the defending champ in the event. Julie Ogden battled it out in her heat, earning the No. 5 seed in the finals (2:00.06). Taylor Camp is seeded fourth in the 200 fly finals (1:46.15). Swimming in the consolation finals will be Martin Vanis as the No. 11 seed (1:49.86) and Kyle Bandy as the No. 12 seed (1:50.54). Tonight finals will begin at 6 pm.
