Track: Strong Finish to BIG EAST
Leading the way was sophomore 60-meter hurdler Chené Townsend, who broke Saturday’s personal record of 8.50 seconds with a time of 8.41 seconds Sunday to place third overall. Redshirt sophomore Sarah Martinelli also set a personal record in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 9:53.44, beating her previous record set earlier this season by two seconds. The mark was good for a 10th-place finish. Senior Katelyn Williams had the best individual placement for the team for both days as she placed second in the high jump with a mark of 1.75 meters, matching her season-best. Teammate Sydney Cummings finished tied for sixth at 1.70 meters. “I am very pleased with this effort,” says WVU coach Sean Cleary. “Williams and Townsend were big-time performers today. We are very happy with how hard we competed.” In the triple jump, sophomore Stormy Nesbit came in ninth place with a distance of 12.17 meters. The 4x400 team of Williams, Brittany Wolford, Shakiyla Cosby and Jenna Barreto placed 13th at a season-best 3:49.19, while the 4x800 foursome of Stephanie Aldea, Shannen Daly, Kaylyn Christopher and Josie Crouch placed 11th with a season-best 9:10.85. “Our goals have revolved around cross country and the outdoor season,” Cleary says. “We made some decisions that left us short-handed this weekend, but will be back much stronger in the spring.” The Mountaineers take a week off from competition before looking to qualify individuals for the NCAA Indoor Championships at the Columbia Last Chance meet Mar. 2-3 in New York City.
