Gymnastics: WVU Down One to No. 23
Today’s ranking is based on the squad’s team average, which moved up to 194.543 on the heels of the Mountaineers’ (10-3, 5-0 EAGL) 194.8 score in wins over Maryland (194.55), Rutgers (191.7) and William & Mary (191.175) in Maryland on Feb. 18. The Mountaineers have been ranked in the Top 25 every week this season and reached No. 20 on Jan. 30. Starting next week, rankings will be based on regional qualifying score (RQS). WVU continues to rank in the Top 25 on three events. The Mountaineers held steady at No. 22 (48.543) on beam and dropped to No. 23 on vault (48.775) and floor (48.807). Two Mountaineers own national all-around rankings. Sophomore Hope Sloanhoffer is ranked No. 31 (39.121), and junior Kaylyn Millick is ranked No. 49 (38.988). The Mountaineers’ Southeast Regional rankings did not change this week, as the squad continues to rank No. 4 overall and on vault, beam and floor; WVU is No. 6 (48.418) on bars. Sloanhoffer, ranked No. 7 in the all-around, also is regionally ranked on all four events. The Cornwall, N.Y., native paces the team on beam and vault and checks in at No. 11 (9.796) and No. 14 (9.811), respectively. She also is tied with junior Kaylyn Millick at No. 17 (9.739) on bars and ranks No. 19 (9.775) on floor. In addition to her bars ranking, Millick, a Washington, Pa., native, also is ranked No. 9 in the all-around, No. 17 (9.765) on beam and No. 22 (9.77) on floor. A pair of freshmen are ranked alongside Sloanhoffer and Millick on beam, with Lia Salzano at No. 14 (9.775) and Beth Deal at No. 21 (9.717). Junior Alaska Richardson is ranked a team-best No. 12 (9.804) on floor, while classmate Chelsea Goldschrafe is No. 23 (9.735) on vault and senior Nicole Roach is No. 21 (9.721) on bars. Additionally, senior Tina Maloney is ranked No. 12 (38.632) in the all-around, and Goldschrafe is No. 18 (38.375). The Mountaineers continue to chase NC State, ranked No. 19 nationally, in the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) standings at No. 2. The squad also ranks No. 2 on vault, beam and floor, and No. 5 on bars. Sloanhoffer ranks No. 1 in the all-around for the sixth consecutive week; the two-time EAGL Gymnast of the Week has scored 39.0-plus six times this season and has won the all-around four times, including a victorious 39.15 performance two days ago. She also ranks No. 2 on beam, No. 7 on floor and No. 8 on vault and bars. Millick owns four league Top 10 rankings and checks in at No. 3 in the all-around, No. 4 on beam, No. 8 on bars and No. 9 on floor. Salzano and Deal are ranked No. 3 and No. 10, respectively, on beam, while Richardson ranks No. 2 on floor and Maloney ranks No. 7 in the all-around. The Mountaineers stay on the road and travel to league foe New Hampshire, ranked No. 3 in the EAGL with a 193.896 season average, on Saturday, Feb. 25, for a 7 p.m. dual meet at Lundholm Gymnasium, in Durham, N.H. The contest will be WVU’s last against an EAGL opponent until the league championship on March 24. |
