MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team will travel to Ohio this weekend for a pair of matches against Cincinnati at 4 p.m. on Saturday and Dayton at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
The Mountaineers will head into the two contests after earning a split against BIG EAST foes Connecticut and Marquette last weekend in Milwaukee.
“We were happy with the win we got against Connecticut last Saturday,” says coach Tina Samara. “Veronica (Cardenas) rebounded well after a loss in the second set of her match to get the clinching point. Marquette was a very solid team, and in order to notch victories against teams of that caliber, we have to come out and play at the top of our game. Overall, though, we were pleased with how the weekend went.”
The Bearcats enter Saturday’s match with a 1-8 record overall, a 0-2 mark in the BIG EAST and are coming off of a 7-0 loss to Akron.
In last year’s match against Cincinnati, WVU was defeated 6-1. Cardenas scored the lone singles for the Mountaineers against the Bearcats last season.
The Flyers collected their first win of the season last Sunday with a 6-1 win over Ohio Northern and will head into the non-conference match with a 1-7 record the season.
“We cannot underestimate either of our opponents this weekend,” Samara says. “With the situation that we are in currently, we just have to go out and focus on the match in front of us and play to the best of our ability - that means playing hard and having fun while doing it.”
WVU holds a 10-6 lead in the all-time series against Cincinnati, while this will be the first time in program history that it has faced Dayton.
A full recap of both matches will be available on MSNsportsNET.com at completion of competition.
