MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia women’s soccer team will take part in six matches during the 2012 spring season, in addition to games played during a nine-day international tour.

“The spring season is a critical time for player development, and the variety of games we have scheduled will helps us improve in both an individual and team setting,” says coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “We are taking our fourth foreign tour this spring, this time heading to Spain. The experience and knowledge gained from this additional time together will help our team chemistry as we venture into a new conference this fall.”

West Virginia will play host to Akron on Saturday, March 3, to open spring competition. The Mountaineers and Zips will play a 90-minute contest, beginning at 2:30 p.m., at Dreamswork Field.

Next up is WVU’s annual 4-versus-4 tournament to raise funds for the Betty Puskar Breast Care Center. On March 10, teams will compete in the “Three’s a Team…the Fourth’s a Mountaineer” all-day event at the Caperton Indoor Facility. The tournament is open to boys and girls in grades three through eight, with an open division for college-age and older groups.

The following day, the Mountaineers take to the road for a 2 p.m. match at Maryland on March 11.

Taking advantage of an NCAA rule that allows programs to travel overseas as part of an international tour every four years, WVU will spend its spring break in Spain on March 24 - April 1. This year’s exhibition tour travels to a number of cities, including Barcelona and Madrid. The Mountaineers will conduct training sessions and play a total of three games, while learning about the culture and history of the area.

WVU returns to action on April 14 with a 3 p.m. home match against Eastern Kentucky.

On April 21, the Mountaineers travel to Columbus, Ohio, to take on Ohio State and Pitt.

The spring booking concludes with a home match versus Alderson-Broaddus on April 29. Kickoff is slated for 3 p.m.
