Swimming: Two to Compete in Olympic Trials
"Having Mandie and Jared represent WVU at their home country’s Olympic Trials is great for our program,” says coach Vic Riggs. “Along with the U.S. team members that will be competing in trials, I think it shows that our program can compete at the highest level and with the best in the world.” Nugent, a native of Greater Manchester, England, will compete in the 2012 British Gas Swimming Championships, March 3-10. The championships will be held at the Olympic Park in London in the Aquatics Centre. Nugent will compete in the 100 fly and 200 fly. The Olympic Qualifying Time in the 100 fly is 58.70 and 2:08.95 in the 200 fly. “Mandie is in a good place right now and I expect she will swim very well at British trials,” says Riggs. “This has been our plan all year and she knew this was going to be a tough month. She’s trained very well and to compete in the British Trials and the NCAAs is an honor. I know she’ll represent both England and WVU very well.” Goldthorpe hails from New South Wales, Australia. He returned home in July and decided to sit out this year’s season with the Mountaineers to train. Goldthorpe will compete in the 100 and 200 back at the 2012 Australian Swimming Championships, March 15-22, at the South Australian Aquatic and Leisure Centre. The Olympic Qualifying Time in the 100 back is 54.40 and 1:58.48 in the 200 back. “Jared is excited about the Australian Trials and has been training and racing well,” says Riggs. “I’m sure he has some high expectations and will compete at his best. Having the experience from the NCAAs last year will help and I’m looking forward to him bringing his experience back to the team.” Each country can enter a maximum of two competitors, who have achieved an Olympic Qualifying Time, per event.
