MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Four members of the WVU women’s swimming team have qualified for the NCAA Women’s Championships from March 15-17 in Auburn, Ala.
Juniors Rachael Burnett, Kata Fodor and Mandie Nugent, as well as sophomore Danielle Smith have qualified as part of the 800 free relay that set a BIG EAST, school and pool record with a time of 7:06.87 at this year’s BIG EAST Championships. The foursome is seeded 15th in the event at NCAAs.
“Knowing that Rachael and Mandie had qualified in their events, it is great to have the 800 free relay make the meet as it is another step towards our goal of taking a full team to NCAAs,” coach Vic Riggs says. “Rachael and Mandie have the experience from past NCAAs and that will be valuable in their goals of getting second swims. This is a great opportunity for Danielle and Kata to get experience at this level which will help them next year.”
Individually, Nugent was the lone Mountaineer to receive an automatic qualifying time after posting a BIG EAST, school and pool record in the 200 fly with a time of 1:54.43 at the BIG EAST Championships. With that time, Nugent is currently seeded No. 2 in the country in the 200 fly, while also being seeded No. 34 in the 100 fly (53.14) and No. 35 in the 500 free (4:42.80).
Burnett comes in as the No. 12 in the 500 free (4:39.63), No. 21 in the 200 free (1:45.82) and No. 21 in the 1,650 free (16:13.94).
Fodor will go to the meet ranked No. 47 in the 500 free (4:44.55) and No. 58 in the 200 free (1:48.10).
Smith rounds out the group as a backstroke specialist who is seeded No. 45 in the 200 back (1:57.42) and No. 50 in the 100 back (54.36)
This will be Nugent’s third trip to the championships, while Burnett will be making her second trip. Fodor and Smith will be going for the first time.
