MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – With a final chance to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships, five West Virginia athletes competed in the 5,000-meter run Friday night at the Columbia Last Chance meet at the Armory in New York City.

Looking for a 15:57 indoor NCAA qualification, redshirt sophomore Sarah Martinelli came closest for the team as she finished in fifth place in 17:03.89. Junior Jordan Hamric finished in seventh in 17:09.78, while Stephanie Caruso (ninth) and Aubrey Moskal (11th) finished with respective times of 17:25.23 and 17:28.55.

The 5,000-meter requirement to qualify for the BIG EAST outdoor competition is 17:37, which Martinelli, Hamric, Caruso and Moskal qualified for.

“Tonight was a good night,” says WVU coach Sean Cleary. “We came here with this group to gain our qualifiers for the outdoor BIG EAST meet. I am pleased to have already qualified four so early.”

Redshirt junior Hallie Portner earned a personal record of 17:51.59 to place 15th overall. It was the first time this season the five had competed in the 5,000-meter run as most had registered times in the mile run or 3,000-meter run.

Several Mountaineers will compete Saturday evening as action continues at the Columbia Last Chance meet. Redshirt junior Stephanie Aldea will compete in the mile run at 6:45 p.m. looking for a 4:37 qualification, Chené Townsend in the 60-meter hurdles (8.10 qualification) (6:20 p.m.), Katelyn Williams in the high jump (1.85m qualification)(8:15 p.m.) and Meghan Mock in the long jump (6.45m qualification)(6 p.m.).

Full results will be posted on MSNsportsNET.com at the conclusion of the meet.
