MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Trying to extend the indoor season another week, the West Virginia track and field team saw its 2012 indoor season come to a close as four athletes competed Saturday evening at the Columbia Last Chance meet in New York City.

Despite tying a season-high mark of 1.75 meters and first-place finish in the high jump, senior Katelyn Williams’ Mountaineer career ended as she came just shy of the 1.85-meter requirement to advance to the NCAA Indoor Championships.

“Katelyn Williams has been a model of consistency since the day she stepped on campus,” says WVU coach Sean Cleary. “She came to WVU with great expectations and graduates as an All-American while leaving behind a tremendous bar for future Mountaineers to strive for. We have been very lucky to have her with us wearing gold and blue.”

Redshirt sophomore Chené Townsend earned a second-best season mark of 8.46 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles as she finished above the required mark of 8.10 seconds to advance to the national finals.

Stephanie Aldea had a strong performance in the mile run by finishing in 5:03.46, arriving past the 4:37 nationals standard.

Senior Meghan Mock placed first in the long jump with a season-best 5.76-meter jump, landing short of the 6.45-meter benchmark to reach the NCAAs.

“This was a nice finish to our indoor season,” Cleary says. “It’s clear that both Meghan and Chené are ready for some great results once we go outside.”

The NCAA Indoor Championships take place Mar. 9-10, in Boise, Idaho.

The Mountaineers begin the 2012 outdoor season with the Wake Forest Open Mar. 16-17 in Winston-Salem, N.C.
