Women’s Tennis: WVU Tripped Up by Marshall
The match was WVU's first outdoor match of the spring season.
“We fought hard today,” said coach Tina Samara. “We were very close to pulling off an upset. When you look at the scores, you can see that we were able to keep it close throughout the day. Yesterday was the first time we had the opportunity to hit outdoors this season.”
The Thundering Herd began the day by earning the doubles point from the Mountaineers.
In the No. 1 doubles match, sophomore Mary Chupa and freshman Ikttesh Chahal were fell in a hard-fought match to Marshall’s Dominika Zaprazna and Maria Voscekova, 8-6.
With the aid of a point by default in the No. 6 singles match, the Thundering Herd carried a 2-0 lead into singles play.
Senior Veronica Cardenas, who was riding a four-match winning streak for the Mountaineers, dropped her match in the No. 3 singles spot to Kara Kucin, 6-0, 6-4.
The lone singles win of the day for WVU came by Chahal, who defeated Kristina Koprcina, 6-1, 4-6, 1-0. The win was Chahal’s second-consecutive singles win, and she is now 2-0 since being moved to the No. 4 spot last week.
Following the Chahal win, Marshall would put the match out of reach and move their home record to a perfect 5-0 this season.
One of the singles losses was the Thundering Herd's Ellie Ball defeating WVU's Emily Mathis in a tight match. Mathis is currently playing through a stomach strain that was suffered just over three weeks ago.
“With Emily still serving underhand, it continues to show her character and the toughness that we like to see,” Samara said. “But, we still need to work to improve our body language and our negative attitudes.”
The Mountaineers will return home for a match against Eastern Michigan at the Ridgeview Racquet Club on Friday, March 16 at 1 p.m.
