EUGENE, Ore. - The West Virginia University baseball team fell 14-3 in seven innings to Illinois at PK Park in the final game of the Nike College Showcase.

West Virginia finished the weekend 0-4, with losses to Oregon State, Oklahoma, Oregon and Illinois.

Illinois’ Nick Chmielewski (0-0) managed to hold WVU to three runs on five hits in 3.1 innings. Luke Joyce and Ronnie Muck combined for 3.2 innings of relief, allowing one hit.

Eric Hinkle (0-2) struggled in his fourth start that was short lived after surrendering 14 runs on eight hits in two innings. The Illini batted around in the first inning after the first seven batters reached base in some form.

The scoring did not stop for the Illini in the next two frames as WVU fell behind 14-2 after three innings. Brandon Hohl was one of three Illini with two hits and he finished with a game-high three RBIs.

Ryan McBroom delivered a single up the middle to open up the scoring for the WVU in the third inning. John Polonius then drove in Brady Wilson to bring the score to 10-2 on a fielder’s choice. WVU left the bases loaded to end the inning.

Wilson also finished with an RBI, as he drove in Gabe Brown on a fielder’s choice in the fourth inning.

Jared Hill came on in relief and allowed one hit over four innings for WVU. Hill struck out three and walked four.

Brown led WVU at the plate with a 2-for-3, including a double and one run.

WVU returns to Morgantown for an 11-game home stand that begins on Tuesday against Eastern Michigan. The Mountaineers and Eagles will play again on Wednesday and then Manhattan comes to town for a four-game set starting on Friday, March 16.
