VSR: Zublasing Named Athlete of the Week
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After securing the 2012 national air rifle title, West Virginia junior Petra Zublasing has been named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week.
The Appiano, Italy, native secured the Mountaineers’ second straight NCAA air rifle championship with a 696.2 combined score. She shot a relay-best 593 mark and 103.2 in the finals. Zublasing also placed sixth in smallbore with a 686.7 mark, earning 586 in the relay and 100.7 in the finals.
The 2011 NCAA air rifle runner-up, Zublasing is the 16th Mountaineer shooter to win a national title.

The West Virginia women’s basketball team’s NCAA fate will be announced at the NCAA selection show on Monday, March 12 at 7 p.m. on ESPN.

The No. 25 Mountaineers fell to No. 3/3 Notre Dame in the semifinals of the BIG EAST Championship on Monday at the XL Center … the game was the final BIG EAST contest for the Mountaineers who finished out the tournament going 2-1 … the Mountaineers were led by Asya Bussie and Ayana Dunning with 15 and 12 points, respectively … freshmen Averee Fields and Akilah Bethel chipped in a combined 12 points off the bench.

Juniors Rachael Burnett, Kata Fodor and Mandie Nugent, as well as sophomore Danielle Smith will be competing in the NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships from March 15-17 in Auburn, Ala.

Sophomore Richard Pokorny and freshman Haily VandePoel dove in the NCAA Zone “A” Diving Championships … Pokorny finished 31st on the 1-meter, while Vande Poel took 31st on the 3-meter … VandePoel then improved on the 1-meter and took 14th place, while Pokorny finished 29th on the 1-meter.

The Mountaineers scored their third win over a ranked opponent in seven days as they knocked off No. 8 Arkansas, 195.675-195.125, on March 10, in their home season finale, at the WVU Coliseum ... WVU did not trail the entire meet and split the event wins with the Razorbacks (10-6, 5-3 SEC), scoring victories on floor (49.15-48.475) and uneven bars (48.875-48.475) ... Arkansas won vault (49.075-48.925) and balance beam (49.1-48.725) ... junior Kaylyn Millick scored a career-best 39.175 and finished third in the all-around ... she also paced the team on bars with a 9.85, which was good for a second-place showing ... classmate Alaska Richardson led the squad on floor and vault, finishing first on floor with a career-high 9.9 and placing second on vault with a 9.875 ... sophomore Hope Sloanhoffer won beam with a career-high 9.95.
