Baseball: WVU Hosts Eastern Michigan

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The WVU baseball squad will begin an 11-game home stand with a two-game mid week series against Eastern Michigan from March 13-14 at Hawley Field. Tuesday’s game will begin at 5 p.m., while Wednesday’s contest starts at 1 p.m.
The Mountaineers are seeking to end a five-game losing streak that most recently saw the team go 0-4 at the Nike College Showcase. John Polonius and Gabe Brown led the team last weekend, each batting 4-for-13 with Brown recording two runs, one double and one triple, while Polonius scored one run with two RBIs,
Van Zant will send junior right-hander Dan Dierdorff to the mound during the series. Dierdorff pitched a complete game last week against Niagara, allowing five runs on nine hits with a career-high nine strikeouts.
WVU is batting .227 as a team and is led by Bobby Boyd, who is batting .333 (14-for-42) with six runs, one double and one RBI. Ryan McBroom has four runs, five doubles and eight RBIs with a .310 batting average.
Eastern Michigan is led at the plate by Matt Hitt, who is hitting .381 (8-for-21) on the year with two doubles, one homer and four RBIs. Lee Longo is batting .314 with one double, one triple, one home run and eight RBIs, and Sam Ott is hitting .313 with four doubles, one triple, two homers and seven RBIs.
Eastern Michigan is batting .257 as a team with 19 doubles, nine triples, six homers and 53 RBIs.
WVU holds an 11-4 edge over Eastern Michigan in the all-time series record that started in 1987. The teams split a two-game series last season in Morgantown.
