Rifle: NRA Names Six All-Americans
The Appiano, Italy, native is the second Mountaineer in as many seasons to earn both first team distinctions, as Nicco Campriani achieved the feat last year. Zublasing, the Great American Rifle Conference (GARC) Shooter of the Year, now has three first team NRA All-America recognitions. She was named to the air rifle squad in 2011. “Petra’s honors typify the type of shooter she is,” says Mountaineer coach Jon Hammond. “She is consistent and focused, and no doubt Petra is one of the top collegiate shooters.” Senior Justin Pentz concludes his Mountaineer career with a pair of honors, as he was named a smallbore and air rifle second team All-American. The DuBois, Pa., native earned six career honors and last scored two second team recognitions in 2009. Classmate Michael Kulbacki was named to the air rifle second team, his fourth career honor. The DuBois, Pa., native was named to the air rifle second team in 2009 and the first team in 2010. He also earned smallbore honorable mention recognition in 2010. Freshman Thomas Kyanko, the GARC Rookie of the Year, was named to the smallbore second team, while classmate Taylor Ciotola earned honorable mention recognition. Fellow freshman Meelis Kiisk was named to the air rifle second team. “We had a good showing this year,” Hammond says. “I was a bit surprised by how many All-America honors the team earned. I think this speaks to the squad’s consistency throughout the season. This is a great way for seniors Justin and Mike to go out and a nice reward for the freshmen.” The NRA also honored Hammond, as the six-year WVU coach was named the NRA Distinguished College Coach. He first earned the award in 2008. “That award was a complete surprise,” says Hammond. “It is always nice to be recognized by your peers, but all of the credit goes to this team.” The Mountaineers concluded the 2011-12 season with a 12-2 record and a sixth place showing at the NCAA Rifle Championships on March 10. The squad finished second in air rifle and eighth in smallbore. Prior to the championships, WVU earned its third consecutive GARC championship. |
