MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Following a two-week hiatus from the close of the indoor season, the West Virginia track and field team opens the 2012 outdoor season at the Wake Forest Open on Friday and Saturday, Mar. 16-17, at Kentner Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C.
The women’s hammer throw will kick off the event at 9:30 a.m. Friday and end with the women’s 10,000-meter run at 7:05 p.m. Saturday’s events begin with the javelin throw at 9:30 a.m. and end at approximately 4:35 p.m. with the 1,600-meter relay.
Looking for a good start to the outdoor season, the team will reintroduce six-time All-American Chelsea Carrier-Eades to the lineup after she sat out the indoor season having expired indoor eligibility in 2011. Kate Harrison and Meghan Mock also achieved All-America status following the 2011 outdoor season and will compete this weekend.
“While there were many bright spots to the indoor season, we all agree that in order to be much more competitive at BIG EAST and the national scene, we need to put ourselves in the best possible position to be at our best for the championship season,” says WVU coach Sean Cleary. “We must stay away from sickness and injury. If we do what is required to minimize the chances of sickness or injury, we will increase the probability that we will be successful at the proper time.”
Sarah Martinelli, Jordan Hamric, Stephanie Caruso and Aubrey Moskal have already qualified for the BIG EAST outdoor 5,000-meter with their times at the Columbia Last Chance meet two weeks ago. Chené Townsend is also coming off a strong performance as she achieved an 8.46-second 60-meter hurdles time, her second-best time from the indoor season.
“We had a great finish to last year’s outdoor track season,” Cleary says. “I feel that we have a very comparable team this year. I expect that we will be very competitive in the BIG EAST and eventually see us as a top 25 team.”
