MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team will host Eastern Michigan on Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. at the Ridgeview Racquet Club.
The Eagles, who last competed on March 3, will enter the match with a 4-8 mark during the 2012 campaign.
The contest is also lining up to be the Mountaineers first home outdoors match of the season.
“We have had a chance to practice outside this week, which was good,” says coach Tina Samara. “We would love to have to opportunity to play outside tomorrow, so we will need to hope any rain will hold off.”
Sunday’s match against Eastern Michigan will be WVU’s third consecutive non-conference match in stretch of seven straight against opponents outside of the BIG EAST. Also, it will be the Mountaineers’ first match since in-state rival Marshall defeated them on Sunday.
“The girls were able to get a little bit of rest this week,” Samara says. “Our practices went well all week, and the girls look ready to compete.”
Junior Emily Mathis, who spent close to the last month serving underhand, is still recovering from a stomach strain. Despite the strain, Mathis has played a role in three doubles wins in her last five trips to the court.
“Emily status as far as serving is still questionable,” Samara says. “However, we cannot say enough about the way she has battled through the injury. She has shown a lot of character over the last couple of weeks.”
A full recap of tomorrow’s action will be available on MSNsportsNET.com after the completion of competition.
