Rowing: Opens Spring Schedule Against GW
The Mountaineers have four entries in this weekend’s competition with one boat set to compete in the women’s varsity eight event, one boat set to compete in the women’s second varsity eight event, one boat set to compete in the varsity four event and one boat set to compete in the women’s second varsity four event. “The scrimmage provides our team with a fantastic opportunity to prepare for the start of the racing season next weekend,” says coach Jimmy King. West Virginia has faced the Colonials three times in program history, ultimately coming away with one first-place finish and six second-place finishes in multiple events. Saturday’s competition will be comprised of two sessions, with the first session consisting of five racing pieces that will each last five minutes and the second session consisting of a number of shorter racing pieces that will be approximately 500 meters in length. “The morning session will be race-specific prep incorporating all of the aspects of racing over the course of the five pieces,” King says. “We'll do some pieces with racing starts, some simply at base cadence and some with finishing sprints. “As we would do in a normal workout at home, the coaches will be able to briefly talk with each crew between pieces regarding needed adjustments,” King continues. “Unlike at home, our crews will be racing against outside competition. As any coach in any sport knows, you cannot duplicate that atmosphere and that level of competition alone.” The Mountaineers will open the racing season on Saturday, March 24 when they travel to Lake Lure, N.C. to compete against UNC and Georgetown.
