WVU 15th in Latest Directors' Cup Standings

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University, the top-ranked BIG EAST school, currently stands in 15th place in the 2011-12 Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup first winter standings.

Down two spots since the final fall standings, WVU has compiled 339.0 points to date. WVU picked up 142 points in the latest poll, with rifle’s sixth-place finish contributing 64 points. Women’s swimming (47 points) and wrestling (31 points) also counted towards the school’s latest standing.

Four BIG EAST schools rank behind WVU in the top 50, with Louisville at No. 33 with 262.0 points and Notre Dame at No. 34 with 257.5 points. Connecticut (No. 36) and Syracuse (No. 50) also rank in the top 50.

Stanford leads all schools with 648.75 points, followed by Florida State (518.0), Wisconsin (471.0), Penn State (459.5) and Texas (443.0).

WVU has finished in the top 50 in the Directors’ Cup standings for four straight years, including last season’s 40th-place finish. WVU finished 37th in 2010, a school-best 30th in 2009 and 50th in 2008.

The Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution’s finish in up to 14 sports – seven women’s and seven men’s.

The next winter Division I standings will be released on Thursday, April 5.
