MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – The West Virginia University women’s team will head to the state of Florida this weekend for a spring break road trip that will include matches against non-conference opponents North Florida, Stetson and Central Florida.
“We are very excited about our upcoming trip to Florida,” says coach Tina Samara. “We are riding a little bit of momentum after last Friday’s match against Eastern Michigan, plus we will head into these matches well-rested.”
The Mountaineers will begin the slate of matches with a match against the Osprey of North Florida, who sport a 6-4 ledger this season, on Sunday.
The previous and only matchup between the two teams occurred in 1992. The Mountaineers earned a 5-4 victory in that contest.
Following the match against North Florida, WVU will continue its trip with a date against Stetson on March 27. The Hatters have compiled an 8-2 overall record this season. It will be the first time in program history that the Mountaineers will square off against Stetson.
The last match of the southern swing for WVU is a contest against Central Florida. The Knights are 5-9 overall this season and 0-1 all-time against the Mountaineers, with the last matchup between the two programs coming in 1991.
“Each of these matches will give us a unique challenge,” Samara says. “If we go out and compete our hardest during every point, we will give ourselves a chance to walk away victorious. In addition, we will also need to make sure we minimize our mistakes.”
In WVU’s 5-2 win against Eastern Michigan last Friday, four of the team’s five players scored victories in their singles matches, while each doubles combo also notched a win.
Senior Veronica Cardenas
’ win was her team-leading ninth of the season, while junior Emily Mathis
, sophomore Mary Chupa
and freshman Ikttesh Chahal
each earned their fifth singles win of the season.
“We had what I would consider one of our best team performances of the season last Friday,” Samara says. “Each player contributed to the victory as a team, which also means that each player was successful individually.”
