MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Led by junior discus thrower Heather Adams
, the No. 24 West Virginia track and field team opened the 2012 Raleigh Relays with a strong start Friday at NC State’s Paul H. Derr Track in Raleigh, N.C.
Adams, a Reedsville, Pa., native, finished seventh in the discus throw with a career-best 46.29 meters, beating her old mark of 41.22 meters to move from third to second on the WVU all-time best mark list for the event. With the BIG EAST-qualifying mark, she moved ahead of Brittany Fink’s distance of 42.31 meters from the 2010 outdoor season.
Sophomore transfer Stormy Nesbit
also had a strong performance in the long jump as she finished first in her flight and seventh overall at 5.77 meters to pass the BIG EAST qualification of 5.60 meters.Sarah Martinelli
ran well in section three of the 1,500-meter run to place third in 4:33.54, also a BIG EAST-qualifying mark. She already qualified for BIG EAST in the 5,000 meter at the Columbia Last Chance meet.
In section four of the 1,500 meter, Josie Crouch
placed third in 4:40.86, while Letitia Propst
finished fifth in 4:42.74 and Hallie Portner
arrived in eighth at 4:43.87. Redshirt junior Lauren Moskal
placed 27th overall and fourth in her section of the 1,500 meter in 4:58.66..
In the 400-meter dash, senior Brittany Wolford
led the team with a time of 59.53 to place fourth in her heat. Freshman Kelly Williams
arrived in fourth in her heat at 1:00.65, while Allison Tyree
came in seventh in her heat in 1:04.47.
Saturday’s Raleigh Relays events begin at 9:30 a.m. with the 3,000-meter race walk and conclude with the 4x400 relays at 4:30 p.m.
