VSR: Carrier-Eades Named Athlete of the Week
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Senior Chelsea Carrier-Eades is the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week following her first-place performance in the heptathlon over 21 elite competitors last week at the Texas Relays in Austin, Texas.
The Buckhannon, W.Va., native and No. 3-ranked heptathlete totaled a second-best career mark of 5,821 points for the seven events, including first-place finishes in the 100-meter hurdles and long jump and second-place marks in the 200-meter dash and high jump.
The six-time All-American also earned a career-best time of 2:18.39 in the 800-meter run for fifth place in the event.

This Week in WVU Baseball
The Mountaineers return home to the confines of Hawley Field to take on BIG EAST opponent Villanova from April 5-7 … Thursday and Friday’s games will begin at 1 p.m., with Saturday’s series finale beginning at 1 p.m.

WVU took one of three at St. John’s over the weekend … the Mountaineers dropped game one in a walk-off, 7-6, while coming back the next day to win 3-1 … the rubber match featured nine unearned runs scoring for the Red Storm, as St. John’s defeated WVU 14-6 … the Mountaineers also fell earlier in the week to Morehead State (7-5) in the Mountaineer Diamond Classic.

The novice four crew of Bethany Sapen, Melinda Sharon, Enya Messersmith, Kaitlyn Eason and coxswain Caitlin Madamba earned its first win of the season at the Occoquan Sprints, crossing the line in 8:12.60 in its flight … the time was the second-fastest out of 18 crews, allowing the team to place second overall in its event … the varsity four crew of Sarah Hansard, Tamyra Roberts, Rebecca Knecht, Brianna Dendler and coxswain Sarah Cartwright placed seventh out of 21 crews overall … in women’s second varsity eight competition, the Mountaineers advanced to the Petite Final where they placed second … the team placed sixth out of 13 crews during varsity eight competition.

West Virginia split to send four athletes to the Texas Relays and the rest to the Raleigh Relays … senior Chelsea Carrier-Eades won the heptathlon over 21 competitors at the Texas Relays with a second-best personal record of 5,821 points … she totaled 3,536 points on Wednesday between the 100-meter hurdles (1st, 13.40), 200-meter dash (2nd, 24.16), high jump (2nd,1.72m) and shot put (7th, 11.49m) … to earn the win Thursday, she placed first in the long jump (6.22m), seventh in the javelin (32.36m) and fifth in the 800-meter run (2:18.39) … Sydney Cummings qualified for the NCAA East Regional by coming in second place in the high jump with a season-best 1.75-meter jump, matching her career best from 2011 … Meghan Mock placed seventh in the long jump at a season-best 5.91 meters … Chene Townsend won her heat of the 100-meter hurdles preliminaries in 13.84 seconds …in Raleigh, discus thrower Heather Adams finished seventh with a career-best 46.29 meters to qualify for BIG EAST … Stormy Nesbit finished seventh in the long jump at 5.77 meters to qualify for BIG EAST … Sarah Martinelli placed third in the 1,500 meter in 4:33.54 for a league qualifier … hammer thrower Terina Miller finished sixth with a career-best 55.25-meter throw, while Adams placed 10th at 52.10m and Alanna Pritts 33rd at 41.72m … the 4x800 team of Jessica O’Connell, Stephanie Aldea, Hallie Portner and Sarah Martinelli finished second in 9:04.53, their first race of the year.
