West Virginia University currently stands in 18th place in the 2011-12 Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup midseason standings.

Down three spots since the first winter standings, WVU has compiled 414.0 points to date. WVU picked up 75 points in the latest poll, with the addition of 50 points from women’s basketball’s 17th place overall finish and 25 points earned from the men’s basketball overall finish of 33rd place.

West Virginia is one of only three BIG EAST schools to rank in the top 25 and one of six to fall in the top 50. Notre Dame sits atop the standings for the conference at No. 11 with 503.5 points, while Louisville is No. 14 with 464 points. Behind the Mountaineers are Connecticut (No. 34), Georgetown (No. 43) and Syracuse (No. 50).

Stanford held on to its position as the Directors’ Cup leader with 876.75 points, followed by Ohio State (707.0), Penn State (655.50), Florida State (626.50) and Florida (612.0).

WVU has finished in the top 50 in the Directors’ Cup standings for four straight years, including last season’s 40th-place finish. WVU finished 37th in 2010, a school-best 30th in 2009 and 50th in 2008.

The Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution’s finish in up to 20 sports – 10 women’s and 10 men’s.

The final Division I standings will be released on Thursday, April 19, upon the completion of the spring season.
