MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Three meets into the outdoor season, the West Virginia track and field team will send four athletes to the 38th Stanford Invitational from April 6-7 in Palo Alto, Calif.
Distance runners Jordan Hamric
, Stephanie Caruso
, Jessica O’Connell and Stephanie Aldea
will represent the team looking for NCAA regional and BIG EAST-qualifying times at Stanford’s Cobb Track and Angell Field.
“We are going to California to take advantage of the competition and the weather,” says WVU coach Sean Cleary. “We fully expect to qualify the group for BIG EAST or the NCAA East Regional.”
A 2011 BIG EAST 3,000-meter steeplechase qualifier, Hamric will compete in the event for the first time this season at 1 p.m., Friday. Last season, she placed first in the event at the Bill Van Horne Invitational in 11:32.26 and fourth place at the Jesse Owens Classic in 10:56.31.
Caruso will compete in the 10,000-meter run for the first time this outdoor season. She is coming off a career-best mark of 17:25.23 in the 5,000-meter run at the Columbia Last Chance and qualified for the mile run at BIG EAST.
Aldea and O’Connell will compete in the 1,500-meter run for the first time this year. O’Connell opened the outdoor season with a first-place finish in the 3,000 meter at the Wake Forest Open with a career-best time of 9:30.06. Both helped the 4x800 relay squad to a second-place finish last week at the Raleigh Relays.
