MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – The West Virginia University women’s tennis team will play its final home match of the season on Saturday afternoon, as it will welcome California (Pa.) to the Ridgeview Racquet Club for a match that is set to begin at 1 p.m.

“As we prepare for the final few matches of our season, we would like to get our best tennis out over the last stretch of the season,” says coach Tina Samara. “We know that we are on right on the cusp of qualifying for the BIG EAST tournament, which means we are going to have to be ready to play on Saturday.”

The Vulcans, who are ranked No. 8 at the Division II level, head into the match with a 16-5 record overall and victories over previous WVU opponents Pitt, Duquesne and Cincinnati.

“We cannot look at them as a Division II opponent,” Samara says. “We can see that they are capable of beating Division I schools. They have also shown flashes of being the best team at their level. There is no doubt that we will need to limit our mistakes”

The match against the California will be the Mountaineers first since March 28, when they completed their Florida spring break trip with a match against Central Florida.

“We didn’t have the success we wanted to have while we were in Florida,” Samara says. “However, these last couple of matches will carry a large amount of meaning, so we have to wipe that tough experience from our memory.”

For seniors Veronica Cardenas and Catie Wickline, the contest will be their last opportunity to play at home for WVU.

Cardenas currently leads the team with 9 singles win this season, while Wickline has played in all but one of the Mountaineers 17 matches this season.

“We would like to send each of seniors off with win on Saturday,” Samara says. “Each of them will have the chance to make that happen, since they will be in the lineup.”

A full recap of the match against the Vulcans will be available on MSNsportsNET.com after the completion of competition.
