MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Looking to improve times and distances for additional league and regional qualifying marks, the West Virginia track and field team heads to Princeton, NJ, to compete at the Larry Ellis Memorial Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Apr. 20-21.

Friday’s events begin with the heptathlon at 1 p.m. and end with the women’s 5,000-meter run at 9 p.m. The meet continues Saturday with the 4x100 relay and shot put at noon and ends at approximately 6 p.m. with the 4x400 relay.

“We’re looking for continued consistency as this will be the last competition for the majority of the team,” says WVU coach Sean Cleary. “We are looking to put ourselves a step closer to being ready for the BIG EAST meet. It will serve as a chance for our coaches to best determine where to place our group. This competition should help create a clearer picture.”

Several mid-distance runners are slated to compete Friday night, with Sarah Martinelli and Stephanie Aldea competing in the 1,500-meter run and Hallie Portner and Alison Kimble competing in the 5,000-meter run. Redshirt juniors Aubrey Moskal and Jordan Hamric will compete in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Last week at the Jesse Owens Classic, senior Chelsea Carrier-Eades placed second in both the 100- and 400-meter hurdles with season-best times and Martinelli came in fourth in the 1,500-meter with a career-best 4:31.76. Jumper Stormy Nesbit earned a career-best 5.99 meters in the long jump, and freshman discus thrower Karissa Knabenshue earned a 41.61-meter throw, which ranks fourth-best on the WVU all-time best marks list for the event.

A total of 19 athletes have qualified for 13 events at the BIG EAST Outdoor Championships from May 4-6 in Tampa, Fla.

“Each week we add a few more names to the roster for the championships,” Cleary says. “I expect a few more to make the qualifying marks for both BIG EAST and the NCAAs. The weather forecast looks good. We are looking forward to the competition.”
