Baseball: WVU Swept by Seton Hall
WVU falls to 17-27 on the season and 5-13 in BIG EAST play. Seton Hall improves to 26-18 overall and has an 11-7 mark in conference play. On Sunday, the Pirates made short work of Mountaineer starter Dan Dierdorff (4-5) who was chased for six runs (three unearned) in 2.2 innings. Seton Hall took a 6-0 lead with one triple, two doubles and a single in the third inning and never looked back. The Pirates had 12 hits on Sunday to the Mountaineers’ seven and West Virginia committed two errors that produced three unearned runs. After the Pirates tacked on one run in the fourth and fifth innings for an 8-0 lead, WVU broke up the perfect game by Brian Gilbert (3-4) and avoided the shutout by scoring four runs on six hits. Gilbert finished the afternoon by allowing four runs on six hits in seven innings. Gilbert struck out seven and did not issue a walk. Junior shortstop John Polonius began the rally with a double to left field, followed by four-consecutive singles from sophomore third baseman Nate Antone, junior catcher Alan Filauro, junior right fielder Brady Wilson and freshman center fielder Bobby Boyd. Filauro’s and Boyd’s singles each drove in runs, while sophomore first baseman Ryan McBroom and freshman second baseman Billy Fleming drove in the last runs of the inning. However, the four-run lead was quickly pushed to a five-run advantage as Seton Hall tagged junior right-handed reliever Austin Pressly for one run in the bottom of the sixth. The Mountaineers begin a four-game homestand next week with Louisville from May 5-6. The teams will play a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m. on Saturday, while Sunday’s finale begins at 1 p.m. The games will be video and audio streamed through MSNsportsNET.com. |
