Women's Soccer: Olympic Camp For McCarthy
McCarthy is one of six defenders on the roster trying to earn a final roster spot for this summer’s Olympic Games in London. “I am excited to train and compete for a spot on the Olympic roster for Canada,” says McCarthy, who last competed for Canada two months ago at the Cyprus Cup where her team finished second. “This is a great opportunity for me, and I’m thrilled to be able to represent my country over the next several months.” McCarthy, an All-BIG EAST outside back for WVU, will continue to train with Canada during camps and international friendly matches leading up to the Olympics. Canada’s currently in the midst of a three-week training camp in Vancouver. After a week off, they will face China in a friendly in Moncton, New Brunswick, in late May. The final North American tune-up will come against the United States on June 30 in Sandy, Utah. They'll travel to Switzerland on July 5 for a pre-Olympic tournament before arriving in London. Canada will square off against defending World Cup champion Japan on July 25 in the 12-team Olympic tournament. They will face World Cup Bronze medalist Sweden, along with South Africa, to complete Group F play. |
