MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia women’s basketball coach Mike Carey has announced Krystal Forthan has signed a grant in aid to join the Mountaineer squad for the 2012-13 season.
“We are extremely happy to have a high caliber player like Krystal in our program,” Carey said. “She is a very talented player who will add instant notoriety to WVU women’s basketball. The coaching staff and players are excited to have Krystal join us as she is a great addition to the Mountaineer family.”
In compliance with NCAA rules, Forthan, who is transferring from Louisiana State University, will sit out the 2012-13 season and will have three remaining years of eligibility starting with the 2013-14 season.
The 6-foot-4 forward averaged 5.7 points per game and 3.1 rebounds per game as a freshman with the Tigers. She played in 28 games, earning two starts, and was a two-time recipient of the SEC Freshman of the Week award. Forthan ranked second on the team in blocked shots with 24 and recorded a career-best 17 points against Alabama State.
A native of Portland, Ore., Forthan went to high school at Georgetown High in Texas and played on the same AAU team TeamXpress for coach Clarissa Davis as former Mountaineer Sarah Miles. Out of high school, Forthan was listed as one of the nation’s elite high school prospects as she ranked fifth by ESPN Hoop Gurlz and was a finalist for the Naismith High School Player of the Year. Forthan was a unanimous McDonald’s and WBCA All-American and helped Georgetown High to a 33-4 record and the Class 5A state championship game as a senior in 2011.
Forthan joins Bria Holmes (Hamden, Conn./James Hillhouse), Lanay Montgomery (Germantown, Md./Academy of the Holy Cross), Darius Faulk (New York, N.Y./Nazareth Regional), Jennie Simms (Accokeek, Md./Riverdale Baptist) and Makenzie White (Danville, W.Va./Scott) as newcomers to next year’s WVU squad.
