Zach Bargeron
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – A complete game by sophomore left hander Zach Bargeron led the WVU baseball team to a victory over La Salle on Tuesday afternoon at Hawley Field.

“That was the best outing of his career,” coach Greg Van Zant says. “He went out and pitched a complete game and kept his walks down. He did a great job and did exactly what you have to do to win a midweek game.”

The game marked the last non-conference game of the season for the Mountaineers, while it was the first game in baseball history between the Mountaineers and Explorers. WVU improved to 21-31 overall this season, while La Salle dropped to 20-30.

After giving up one run in the second inning, Bargeron (2-2) shut down La Salle by allowing just one run on three hits. Bargeron struck out four and walked two in his first career complete game.

“I’ve been working really hard in my bullpens and changed my approach as a starter,” Bargeron says.

Trailing 1-0 heading into the bottom of the second, WVU took the go-ahead lead at 3-1 as a single into left field by sophomore third baseman Nate Antone took a weird twist. During the single, freshman second baseman Billy Fleming stopped at third and junior left fielder Chris Rasky stopped at second to load the bases. La Salle left fielder Tony Negrin was unable to field Antone’s hit cleanly and the ball went under his glove, allowing Fleming and Rasky to score, while Antone advanced to second. In the same play Antone advanced to third on another error, this time by the third baseman Dan Klem, who went to throw Antone out at second. Antone scored from third in the next at bat on a single through the left side by junior catcher Alan Filauro.

The Mountaineers took a 4-1 lead in the fourth inning when Fleming led off the inning with a double to left field and was eventually driven in by a sacrifice fly to right field by Antone.

Junior shortstop John Polonius extended the lead to 5-1 in the seventh inning, scoring on a double to right field by sophomore designated hitter Matt Frazer.

Fleming paced the WVU offense with two hits, two doubles, two runs and a walk. Filauro finished his evening with two hits and an RBI.

The loss went to La Salle starter Shane Petrellis, who allowed four runs on four hits in four innings. Dominic Sgroi and Mike McLeod pitched a combined four innings of relief and allowed one run on four hits.

WVU welcomes USF to Hawley Field this weekend from May 17-19, for the final BIG EAST series of the regular season. Thursday’s and Friday’s games begin at 7:05 p.m., and Saturday’s series finale starts at 1 p.m. Friday’s game has been designated as a “Dollar Night” with all tickets and select concessions costing just $1.
