MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – Three West Virginia University student-athletes have been inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, the nation’s oldest honor society for the liberal arts and sciences.

“Induction into the Phi Beta Kappa honorary is a tremendous honor for these three exemplary student-athletes,” says Director of Student-Athlete Academic Services, Paul Downey.

Ahna Lewis, a Morgantown native, earned a bachelor’s degree in secondary education and a master’s degree in English during her time as a distance runner for cross country and track and field. She was the recipient of the Elite 89 Award for NCAA Division I cross country, was named to the 2011-12 American Eagle Outfitters BIG EAST Institutional Female Scholar-Athlete list, and held a perfect 4.0 GPA throughout her five years as a student-athlete.

Abby Monson, a native of Centennial, Colo., recently graduated with a double major in business management and Spanish and will be pursuing a master’s in business administration at West Virginia this fall. A member of the Mountaineer volleyball team, she was a recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Scholarship and the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences Certificate of Achievement. Throughout her four years as a student-athlete at WVU, she was also a member of the Beta Gamma Sigma Business Honor Society and was named to the College of Business and Economics Dean’s List.

Rachel Viglianco, a member of the rowing team and a native of St. Albans, W.Va., recently earned her master’s degree in secondary English education. During her time as a student-athlete, she earned NSCA All-American Strength and Conditioning honors as well as Capital One All-America at Large Second Team honors. She was also awarded the BIG EAST Scholar Athlete Sport Excellence Award, and named a CRCA National Scholar Athlete in addition to other accolades.

“Each of these young ladies has left their mark on West Virginia University in their own way,” Downey says. “By that same token, WVU has provided them with opportunities to excel as student-athletes and they have taken advantage of those opportunities athletically, academically and as leaders.”
