MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) has honored six West Virginia University student-athletes by naming all six of them to the National Scholar-Athlete Award List, and one to the all-Mid Atlantic Region First Team.

Juniors Hilary Meale, Rachelle Purych and Danika Rencken, and sophomores Morgan Leach, Courtney Schrand and Karen Verwey have all been named scholar athletes for the 2012 season. In order to be considered for the award, the student-athlete must meet all eligibility rules as defined by the university, be in their second, third or fourth year of eligibility, have rowed in NCAA or IRA eligible boats for a minimum of 75 percent of spring races, have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher and have a head coach that is a member in good standing with the CRCA.

“I'm very proud to be associated with these student-athletes,” says coach Jimmy King. “The standards to which they hold themselves in the classroom is of the highest caliber. As a group they have a combined cumulative GPA of 3.835. Each one of them has made tremendous strides since arriving at WVU and it's certainly no coincidence that their progress and achievements in rowing and coxing have mirrored their academic progress and successes.”

Additionally, Courtney Schrand has been named to the All-Mid Atlantic Region First Team. A native of Virginia Beach, Va., Schrand is just the second rower from WVU to have earned the honor as Shannon Gribbons first earned the honor in 2011. In order to be eligible for nomination, the rower must meet all university eligibility rules, have rowed in at least 75 percent of spring races, be nominated by the university and have a head coach in good standing with the CRCA.

Student-athletes named to all-Region Teams are eligible for All-America awards following the NCAA Rowing Championships, which will take place May 25-27 at Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J.

“The progress Courtney has made in her two years at WVU has been quite phenomenal,” King says. “In a sport largely lacking individual statistics and accolades, I'm very happy for Courtney and our team that her accomplishments have earned her a spot on the All Mid-Atlantic Region First Team."

Schrand also earned All-BIG EAST First Team and Team MVP honors this season.
