MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Led by 100-meter hurdlers Chelsea Carrier-Eades and Chené Townsend, the West Virginia track and field team had a strong second day of the NCAA East Regional Friday in Jacksonville, Fla.

Carrier-Eades finished in eighth place overall in the event with a time of 13.13 seconds for second place in her heat to advance to Saturday evening’s quarterfinals at 7:20 p.m. Townsend earned a time of 13.47 seconds, just three hundredths of a second off her personal best. Although she finished fifth in her heat, she advances to Saturday’s quarterfinals by way of finishing as one of the nine top hurdlers outside of the automatic top three finishers from each heat.

UCF’s Jackie Coward won the event in 12.97 seconds, while Ohio State’s Christina Manning placed second in 12.98 seconds.

“Chelsea and Chené were very steady in qualifying,” says WVU coach Sean Cleary. “Chelsea knocked a hurdle and recovered very well. Chené ran a strong opener and was true to form. The level of competition at this meet is simply world-class.”

Junior Sydney Cummings earned a lifetime-best height of 1.77 meters in the high jump for a 19th-place finish in the event. Although the height tied with the qualifying 12th-place jumper, her sequence of heights was not sufficient to advance to the semifinals in Des Moines. Nine high jumpers tied for the top spot at 1.81 meters.

“Sydney did a great job setting a lifetime best,” Cleary says. “She came and jumped the same height as some of the girls who qualified to go to Iowa, and she proved she can compete at the national level by emerging with a clutch performance.”

Junior Jordan Hamric will compete in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at 9:30 p.m.

On Thursday evening, senior Stephanie Caruso competed in the 10,000-meter run and finished in 41st place in 37:37.23.
