Rifle: Campriani Wins Gold in Munich
Shooting for the Italian National Team, Campriani, an native of Florence, shot 1180 (398 prone, 391 standing, 391 kneeling) and sat in a tie for second place after the open relay before shooting a finals-best 100.6 for a Gold-medal worthy1280.6 final tally. Prior to his winning 3 position performance, Campriani shot 592 (98-97-100-100-99-98) in the men’s 50m rifle prone on May 25. Campriani, the reigning air rifle world champion and the 2011 NCAA air rifle champion, won five medals in the last three ISSF World Cups. He opened the Munich World Cup with a third-place showing in the men’s 10m air rifle on May 23. He finished first in air rifle and second in the men’s 50m rifle 3 position at the Milan ISSF World Cup two weeks ago, and he won the men’s rifle 3 position at the London ISSF World Cup on April 28. Mountaineer coach Jon Hammond, a native of Aberdeen, Scotland, and shooting for the Great Britain National Team, bested his former pupil in the men’s 50m rifle prone competition, finishing with a score of 593 (100-99-97-98-99-100). He also shot 1163 (399 prone, 378 standing, 386 kneeling) in the men’s 50m rifle 3 position. Also shooting for the Italian National Team, rising senior Petra Zublasing, the 2012 NCAA air rifle champion and a three-time All-American, closed out the Munich World Cup with a strong performance in the women’s 50m rifle 3 position, shooting 580 (194 prone, 195 standing, 191 kneeling) on May 26 and finishing in 18th place. While the ISSF circuit has concluded, several Mountaineers are scheduled to compete at the USA Shooting National Championships for Rifle and Pistol, at the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit, in Fort Benning, Ga., May 31 – June 11. |
