Track: Carrier-Eades Places Third in Heptathlon
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia senior Chelsea Carrier-Eades posted a strong third-place finish to the heptathlon Friday evening at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa.
Following Friday’s remaining three heptathlon events, the Buckhannon, W.Va., native posted a season-best 5,839 points through the seven events to top her season high of 5,821 from the Texas Relays. Oregon’s Brianne Theisen earned an NCAA meet record with 6,440 points to win the event, followed by UC Santa Barbara’s Barbara Nwaba with 5,927 points.
Wisconsin’s Jessica Flax placed fourth with 5,826 points, while Arizona State’s Keia Pinnick (5,761), San Diego State’s Allison Reaser (5,753) and 18 other athletes followed.
“We are very proud of Chelsea’s last two days,” says WVU coach Sean Cleary. “The heptathlon brings with it so many emotions with seven events coming together for one end result. We felt that on a perfect weekend she could be in the top three, so we are excited for her to pull this off.”
Coming into Friday’s events in fourth place overall in the multi-event, Carrier-Eades placed third in the long jump with a distance of 6.05 meters for 865 points, and followed with an 18th-place mark in the javelin throw at a distance of 32.93 meters for 532 points. She ended the day with a 12th-place finish in the 800-meter run in 2:16.92 for 866 points.
She will compete in the 100-meter hurdles finals Saturday at 1:14 p.m., while teammate Jessica O’Connell will compete in the 5,000-meter run finals at 1:19 p.m.
“She’ll go to bed tonight both satisfied and frustrated, but it is that desire that allows her to compete at this level with success,” Cleary says. “She’ll put it behind her and prepare for tomorrow’s hurdles finals.”
