Track: Carrier-Eades, O’Connell Finish NCAA Run

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia seniors Chelsea Carrier-Eades and Jessica O’Connell concluded the 2012 season for the Mountaineers with strong finishes at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa.

Carrier-Eades finished seventh in the 100-meter hurdles finals in 13.31 to earn two team points. Ohio State’s Christina Manning won the event in 12.89, followed by Clemson’s Brianna Rollins and Bridgette Owens with respective 12.91 and 13.10 marks.

The Buckhannon, W.Va., native topped Stanford’s Katie Nelms, who finished in 13.97. She qualified for the finals by way of her third-place finish and school-record 12.78 earned at Thursday’s semifinals.

O’Connell competed in the 5,000-meter run finals with success as she placed 19th in 17:10.43. Dartmouth’s Abbey D’Agostino won the race in 16:11.34 and was chased by Megan Goethals of Washington, who finished three hundredths of a second behind.

The Calgary, Alberta, native beat Providence’s Charlotte French-O’Carroll, Virginia’s Kathleen Stevens, Syracuse’s Lauren Penney and two other runners for her finish.

LSU earned the team championship with 76 points, followed by Oregon (62), Texas A&M (38), Clemson and Kansas, which tied for fourth with 28 apiece. West Virginia tied for 34th with UC Santa Barbara, Louisiana Tech and South Dakota at eight points each.

On the men’s side, Florida won with 50 points, followed by LSU (48) and Texas A&M (40).
