Track: Carrier-Eades Advances to Hurdles Semis
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia senior Chelsea Carrier-Eades got off to a strong start to the U.S. Olympic Trials by qualifying for the 100-meter hurdles semifinals Friday evening in Eugene, Ore.
A product of Buckhannon, W.Va., Carrier-Eades placed 10th overall in the preliminaries round in 12.95 seconds. The top three finishers from each of the five heats plus the six athletes with the best remaining times advanced to the semifinals round Saturday night at 6:15 p.m. She finished fourth in the first heat in 12.948, just six thousandths of a second behind automatic qualifier LaTisha Holden (12.942).
“We are very happy with how Chelsea ran today,” says WVU coach Sean Cleary. “The 58-degree weather was less than ideal, but she came out and ran the third-fastest time of her life, a very good sign for tomorrow’s semifinals. She will get into an ice bath and have a good meal before coming out strong tomorrow.”
Kellie Wells (Nike) won the preliminaries round in 12.68, followed by Ohio State’s Christina Manning (12.77) and Nike’s Dawn Harper (12.79). Carrier-Eades placed ahead of six of the automatic qualifiers and was the top non-automatic qualifier to advance.
With her top 21 finish in the preliminaries, the eight-time All-American will compete in Saturday evening’s semifinals at 6:15 p.m. The top eight from the semifinals compete in the finals round later Saturday evening at 8:45 p.m.
Carrier-Eades, who recently placed seventh at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, seeks a top-three finish in the finals round to qualify for the London Olympics in August.
She will also compete in the heptathlon beginning Friday, June 29, with the 100-meter hurdles (1:30 p.m.), high jump (2:30 p.m.), shot put (4:15 p.m.) and the 200-meter dash at 5:15 p.m.
The final three heptathlon events occur Saturday, June 30, with the long jump (6 p.m.), javelin throw (7:15 p.m.) and the 800-meter run at 9:20 p.m. The heptathlon field will consist of the nation’s top 18 heptathletes.
Former WVU athlete Josh Simpson competes in the 10,000-meter run later this evening at 9:45 p.m.
