Track: Carrier-Eades Finishes Hurdles Quest
The eight-time All-American finished the round fifth in her heat and 13th overall with a time of 12.96, five spots off from qualifying for the finals slated for 8:45 p.m. The top two finishers from each heat plus the two best remaining athletes advanced to the finals.
“It was another very good race for Chelsea,” says WVU coach Sean Cleary. “She has now become very consistent running under 13 seconds. At this level, if you don’t bring a great performance you sit in the stands - she needed just a little more out of herself. Chelsea is the youngest in the field and will be back stronger from this experience. She has a week to recover and train for next week’s heptathlon.”
Nike’s Dawn Harper won the semifinals with a time of 12.65 and was followed by Clemson’s Brianna Rollins (12.70) and Ohio State’s Christina Manning (12.72). The remaining qualifiers were Kellie Wells (Nike, 12.74), Lolo Jones (Asics, 12.75), Virginia Crawford (Nike, 12.78), Michelle Perry (Nike, 12.80) and Nia Ali (Nike, 12.84).
The top three from the finals round advance to represent the United States at the London Olympic Games in August.
Carrier-Eades’ 12.96 topped eight other hurdlers in the semifinals.
She will compete in the heptathlon beginning Friday, June 29, with the 100-meter hurdles (1:30 p.m.), high jump (2:30 p.m.), shot put (4:15 p.m.) and the 200-meter dash at 5:15 p.m.
The final three heptathlon events occur Saturday, June 30, with the long jump (6 p.m.), javelin throw (7:15 p.m.) and the 800-meter run at 9:20 p.m. The heptathlon field will consist of the nation’s top 18 heptathletes.
Former WVU athlete Josh Simpson competed in the 10,000-meter run late Friday evening and placed 19th in 28:48.32.
