MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Of 277 total teams, West Virginia University finished No. 45 in the final 2011-12 Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings.

WVU has finished in the top 50 in the Directors’ Cup standings for five consecutive years, including last season’s 40th-place finish. WVU finished 37th in 2010, a school-best 30th in 2009 and 50th in 2008.

“It’s certainly a nice accomplishment to finish in the top 50 of the Director’s Cup for the fifth straight year,” Director of Athletics Oliver Luck said. “We are committed to further achievements on the field and in the classroom. Our next step with the Director’s Cup is to get into the Top 25 on an annual basis and build from there. I congratulate our student-athletes, coaches and staff for a strong year of competition.”

The Mountaineers added 38.5 points from women’s track and field in the spring, bringing their final total to 499.0 points.

West Virginia is one of only four Big East schools to rank in the top 50. Notre Dame sits atop the standings for the conference at No. 17 with 843.50 points, while Louisville is No. 32 with 611 points. Behind WVU is Syracuse at No. 50 with 452.5 points.

Seven Big 12 schools finished in the top 50, led by Texas at No. 6 with 1032.50 points. Texas A&M finished ninth with 990.25 points, Oklahoma had 946.0 points for No. 14 and Baylor rounded out the top 25 at No. 25 with 726.0 points. Oklahoma State (512.0) finished at No. 42, Iowa State (498.50) was No. 46 and Missouri (458.5) landed No. 49.

Stanford held on to its position as the Directors’ Cup leader with 1448.25 points, followed by Florida (1314.0), UCLA (1142.75), Ohio State (1104.25) and Florida State (1061.00).

The Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution’s finish in up to 20 sports – 10 women’s and 10 men’s.
