MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University Director of Athletics Oliver Luck today announced the schedule for the upcoming 2012 cross country season.
“As we head into the Big 12 Conference, we have the highest level of confidence that our cross country program will continue to excel under Sean Cleary’s direction,” Luck says. “Not only does the Big 12 feature strong running programs, but we will also continue to compete in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Region against many of the nation’s top programs we have faced for years.”
With top 10 national finishes in four of the past five years, the Mountaineers open the season Aug. 31 with the WVU Alumni Open at the WVU Agronomy Farm in Morgantown. WVU then travels to State College, Pa., for the PSU Spiked Shoe on Sept. 8 to preview the course that will serve as the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional site in November.
Having finished second at last year’s Toledo Bubble Buster, the Mountaineers will run at the event again on Sept. 21 before competing Sept. 29 at the Greater Louisville Classic in Louisville, Ky., the site of the 2012 NCAA Cross Country Championship.
The Mountaineers will preview the Louisville course again on Oct. 13 at the Pre-Nationals meet.
“This schedule allows us to prepare well for a qualifying run into the NCAA Championship,” says WVU coach Sean Cleary. “The meets progress in terms of difficulty and the Big 12 race should present a huge challenge for our team.”
The Big 12 Cross Country Championship will be held Oct. 27 at the University of Texas in Austin, Texas.
The championship portion of the season continues Nov. 9 at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional in State College, Pa., followed by the NCAA Cross Country Championship on Nov. 17 in Louisville, Ky.
