Track: Carrier-Eades Finishes Heptathlon Bid
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia track athlete Chelsea Carrier-Eades put together a strong effort to complete the heptathlon Saturday evening at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore.
The senior from Buckhannon, W.Va. came in 11th place with 5,772 points by scoring solid marks in the long jump, javelin throw and 800-meter run to close the competition.
In the long jump, Carrier-Eades placed 13th at 5.64 meters to earn 741 points, and she ended the day 18th in the javelin throw (32.32 meters, 521) and sixth in the 800-meter run (2:15.48, 886).
“While we did believe that Chelsea had the ability to contend for a spot on this year’s Olympic team, we are very proud of everything she has accomplished not only for WVU but the entire state,” says WVU coach Sean Cleary. “The long jump, one of her strongest events, ended up coming undone for her today. Her speed has gotten so fast that she hasn’t quite figured out how to hit the board the way she needs to. In time, she will return to this meet as the woman to beat.”
The top three finishers advance to represent the United States at the London Olympic Games in August.
Hyleas Fountain won the multi-event with 6,419 points as the top athlete to represent the country and will be accompanied by Sharon Day (6,343) and Chantae McMillan (6,188) as they all met the Olympic qualifying mark of 6,150 points. Bettie Wade (6,018) and Barbara Nwaba (5,986) finished close behind.
