MARBERG, Germany - Former West Virginia University track and field standout Chelsea Carrier-Eades helped lead Team USA to a third straight Thorpe Cup victory over Germany in the heptathlon.

The women of Team USA held off Germany with a team total of 17,332 points to 17,251 with the top three scores from each team counting toward the team total.

Carrier-Eades finished third overall and contributed to the team score with a final point total of 5,783. Kira Biesenbach of Germany won the event with 5,878 points and Bettie Wade of Team USA finished second with 5,795 points.

“This was not only a great honor for Chelsea, but also a wonderful experience for her,” coach Sean Cleary says. “Taking home the bronze medal in such a prestigious event is a great way to end her European tour. Chelsea has a very bright future as she enters the world of professional track and field. Chelsea will return home and together with the coaches, determine if this mark the end of her year.

“Additionally, the Javelin and 800-meter run scores mark her lifetime bests in those events. Now that she has graduated, she will have the time to train and to work out the kinks in her weaker events. Once that happens, the sky is the limit for her.”

On Saturday, Carrier-Eades pulled out two first place finishes in the 100-meter hurdles (13.11, 1,108) and the 200-meter dash (23.84, 996) while also scoring solid marks in the high jump (1.65 meters, 795) and shot put (10.36 meters, 553).

Carrier-Eades opened the second day of competition with a fifth place finish in the long jump with a 6.10 meter mark for 880 points. The Buckhannon, W.Va., native finished the day with a 33.31 meter throw in the Javelin for 539 points and a second place finish in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:13.66 for 912 points.

The win for Team USA marks the fourth victory since the event was established in 2006.
